Dr. John Grew

Dr. John Grew is Professor of Biology at New Jersey City University, an urban HSI in Jersey City NJ with about 38% Latino students and a mean family income of $42,000. In his 25 years at NJCU, he held every academic rank from Assistant Professor to Assistant Academic Vice President. He therefore has a thorough understanding of the challenges and opportunities faced by almost everyone devoted to instruction, support and development of students at HSIs. Dr. Grew contributes to numerous educational and “student success” projects, cooperative arrangements, infrastructure development, accreditation self-studies and site-visit teams, as well as strategic, technology and facilities planning at NJCU. He mentors tenure-track faculty and academic professionals on virtually all aspects of academic life.

Dr. Grew wrote, directed or co-directed 10 successful grants totaling nearly $20 million from the USED (Title III and Title V), NIH and NSF over the past two decades. These projects included major infrastructure, construction and/or equipment improvements, along with providing student research internships and learner support programs that employed close to 400 students in on- campus jobs.

Dr. Grew facilitates Grant Writing and Project Management Institutes for AHSIE, presents at AHSIE conferences, and assisted with the planning and hosting of the 2013 AHSIE conference at NJCU. He also presents at AACU annual STEM education conferences, local and regional conferences on STEM student outcomes, and institutional grant-writing and management training.
